The Salina dei Monaci Nature Reserve

The nature reserve of the Salina dei Monaci. This reserve, located between San Pietro in Bevagna and Torre Colimena (which also belongs to the Municipality of Manduria), features a beautiful sandy beach with rocky sections and a salt pond where, during certain times of the year, one can observe the nesting of pink flamingos and other birds (such as the stilts). In the same reserve, one can admire sandy dunes and a pristine Mediterranean scrub. The name “Salina” derives from the fact that, in 1731, with the arrival of the Benedictine monks, this sandy depression became a permanent site for salt production and storage.
