Torre Colimena, or Torri Columèna as the locals from Manduria call it, is a charming seaside district that is part of the municipality of Manduria, in the province of Taranto, Puglia. In the past, Torre Colimena was one of the fortifications commissioned by Emperor Charles V, King of Spain, as part of an extensive system of coastal towers built to protect the Salento peninsula from Turkish raids. These towers, scattered along the coast, were erected after the 1480 invasion of Otranto, an event that profoundly marked the history of the region and prompted the Spanish authorities to strengthen the defense along the Ionian coast.
The strategic location of Torre Colimena, situated between Torre di San Pietro in Bevagna to the west and Torre Castiglione to the east, offers a stunning view of the coast and highlights the importance of this structure within the coastal defense system. The most significant episode in the history of this locality dates back to 1547, when around one hundred Turkish raiders landed at Torre Colimena. Coming from five ships, the pirates arrived at the quiet sandy harbor of the district, taking advantage of its isolated location to launch a violent raid inland. Led by Khria, a local man who had converted to Islam, the raiders plundered the crops of the farms in San Pancrazio and Avetrana, spreading panic and destruction.
Today, Torre Colimena is a place that retains the charm of the past, while also serving as a landmark for seaside tourism. Its tower, in addition to being a point of historical interest, symbolizes a community that, while preserving its traditions, welcomes visitors with the warm hospitality of Puglia.
